Horse archery is an ancient discipline with origins in hunting and warfare across Asia, the Middle East, and Eastern Europe. In the late twentieth and early twenty-first centuries, the sport experienced a modern revival worldwide, combining traditional mounted archery skills with contemporary safety standards and competitive formats.

In Australia, the growth of interest in this revived discipline led to the establishment of the Australian Horse Archery Association Inc. (AHAA) in 2013 as the national governing body for horse archery. The AHAA was formed to provide consistent rules, grading systems, and competition structures, and to support the safe development of the sport across the country.

Since its formation, the AHAA has overseen the organisation of state and national championships, supported local clubs and branches, and coordinated international tournaments held in Australia. The Association is also responsible for the selection of Australian representatives invited to compete at international horse archery events.

To ensure alignment with global standards, the AHAA is affiliated with major international bodies, including the International Horseback Archery Alliance (IHAA) and the World Horse Archery Federation (WHAF). These affiliations connect Australian riders with the international horse archery community and allow Australian competitions and grading systems to be recognised globally.

Today, the Australian Horse Archery Association continues to promote horse archery as a modern equestrian sport, balancing historical traditions with contemporary competition, safety, and horsemanship principles, while supporting a growing national community of riders and clubs.
